Custom rods offer many design options based upon customer preferences. Split Cane rods are not only a functional tool, but can and should be viewed as works of art. I therefore encourage the customer to be creative so that he or she may end up with a rod that is distinctly unique and to their liking.
Rod coloring, wrap color and style, reel seats, wood spacers, hook keepers, grip type and whether to wrap the grip in rattan are just a sampling of the options you will need to consider aside from length and weight.
With so much to consider and so many decisions to make regarding YOUR rod, we really need to discuss YOUR specifications. That all begins with a simple email to me by clicking on the “Contact Us” tab. We can certainly make these decisions via email but I have found that it is much easier if we talk through YOUR rod and I encourage you to provide a phone number and a convenient time that we can talk.
Custom Rod Options available for your rod:
There’s a lot to consider when designing your own rod. I suggest you give yourself some time to consider the options available to you before contacting me so you have at least a rough picture of what you want. I’ll be happy to walk you through your choices, giving you the pros and cons and suggestions but it helps if you have a “mind picture” of what you want your rod to be. Never loose sight of the fact that this is YOUR CUSTOM ROD…not mine or anyone else’s.
Some things to consider are:
- Rod length
- Rod line weight
- Flamed color of rod (i.e. Blonde, mottled, medium or dark)
- Number of rod pieces (rods are normally 2 piece rods. 3 or 4 piece rods carry additional charges. One piece rods carry additional shipping charges due to their non-standard shipping size)
- Stripping Guide type and color (additional charge applies for agate stripping guides)
- Ferrule type (Super Swiss ferrules are used unless another choice is desired)
- Choice of wrap color (use of color preserver, while not recommended, is an available option)
- Wrap tipping if desired (additional charge applies)
- Decorative spiral wraps at Butt, Ferrules and tip if desired
- Hook Keeper type if one is desired.
- Grip type: Cigar, Western, Full or Half Wells grips are available
- Rattan wrapping of grip if desired (additional charge applies)
- Choice of reel seat: Up or Down locking, single or double sliding band available
- Choice of wood spacer (subject to availability on exotic woods, bamboo, etc.)
- Rod tube color (silver, black or dark green available)
- Rod sock included (colors vary)
NOTE: At this time, I am not making rods that are swelled or hollow butt, or
Rods that are over 9’ in length.

I’ll email you photographs as your rod progresses. Previous customers have commented that this made them feel part of the making process and enjoyed seeing their rod come to fruition.
Since custom rods are not started until your order is received (I don’t even select or split the culm in advance) a 40% deposit is required with all orders with the balance due at time of shipment, including shipping costs.
Payment can be made via Personal Check or through PayPal
Please allow 3 months completion of your custom rod, depending on current order backlog at the time of order.
